7 GOLDEN RULES

Rule 1/ ACCREDITATION

Before you make the final decision it is very important that you are entirely sure that the University i.e. the Faculty you decided to enroll is accredited. The Commission for Accreditation and Quality Assurance founded by the National Higher Education Council (www.kapk.org) published a document “A guide through accredited programmes of study at higher education institutions in the Republic of Serbia”, where you can see which universities i.e. which faculties have received accreditation. Accreditation is a process which establishes whether a higher education institution meets the standards for conducting study-related activities, i.e. it makes sure that programmes of study are in accordance with the standards. Aside from the process of accreditation, the Ministry of education and science checks the working conditions of the faculty and issues a license. It is of prime importance that the faculty you wish to enroll possesses the Accreditation assurance and license.

RULE 2/ FACULTY WEBSITE

Each faculty has its own website where you are able to find a lot of useful information that may be of help when choosing a faculty. Look into the structure of the study programmes, i.e. the courses studied at the individual study programmes and make sure they meet the requirements of your future career. Look into the structure of the teaching staff and associates that lecture at the higher education institution. Carefully read over the news posted on the website and make sure they are up-to-date and diverse. Check whether the website has rulebooks and study instructions, as well as other recommendations that can assure you that the faculty treats its students responsibly and professionally.

RULE 3/ VISIT THE FACULTY

You should never make the final choice before visiting the faculty you want to enroll. No matter how well you think you know the faculty you decided to study, you can find a lot by spending several hours at the premises of the faculty, the choice of which your entire life may depend upon. You are advised to bring along a family member, because you may later exchange experiences with him or her. Singidunum University has an “Open door” policy, aimed at receiving new students, which is why you are advised to schedule your appointment in advance. During the visit you will have the opportunity to distinguish between different faculties and only then will you be able to know what the best choice for you is.

RULE 4/ QUALITY

Sometimes we make a choice of faculty solely on the basis of prejudice, without having checked them against reality. For example if the short-list of the faculties includes those that either your parents or somebody you know attended, you are advised to check how much things have changed since that time, and see whether, once great faculties, have kept abreast of the times and if they apply modern working methods. If the answer is NO, then it is up to you to choose the faculty that can prepare you for the future, provides practice, in addition to theoretical offers hands-on knowledge, and also motivates you to learn at least two foreign languages, helps you to build up your career and eventually find employment. In addition, inquire about the information system and how administration is organized, whether regular office hours are held and if they organize additional classes. The quality of Singidunum University as the winner of the Brand Leader award 2012 was recognized and assessed by students, partners, business and academic community, and confirmed by the results of independent research. Choose QUALITY!

RULE 5/ TUITION

It is important to check what is included in the price of tuition at some faculties, so that they can plan in advance. At Singidunum University the cost of tuition includes textbooks while trust is also built in such way that the price of tuition remains unchanged from the beginning until the end of studies.

RULE 6/ RESEARCH

Conduct research, ask questions, check and make sure that the reality is in accordance with what you think. You will hear many people say that at that faculty “nobody studies”, “it’s too hard”, “it’s too expensive” etc. without them actually being familiar with the facts. Don’t accept such generalizations without any proof. It’s very important to inquire about the experiences of students who currently attend this faculty. Look for “a student advisor” at Singidunum University and he will help you find answers to all the questions related to your student life.

RULE 7/ MAKE A DECISION

After you have explored all options of good-quality education it is time to make a decision. It is important to enroll the faculty which is aware that its teaching staff are partly responsible for your future. The university’s aim should be your acquisition of knowledge and hands-on skills that will enable you to make and achieve great plans.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY PROGRAMME TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT AND ITS SPECIFICITIES

The importance of this study programme can be seen in the fact that there are enormous needs for highly qualified staff in Serbia. Job market which directs students to the jobs in tourism and hospitality represents an important factor for the success of the whole field. The unique study programme with optional courses is realized through the establishment and consistent application of the two big groups of business skills which are intertwined and form the basis of the educational system of the integrated Singidunum University. These are professional business skills, that is expertise, and personal business skills (soft skills).

PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS SKILLS (HARD SKILLS)

Expertise above all, involves education of our students in accordance with the needs of the economy, through lectures, exercises and other educational activities. Knowledge, managerial techniques and tools and the knowledge of theoretical and methodological disciplines and methods enable students to get to know market tendencies and relations in tourism, as well as the problems of managing the same.

Foreign languages are the imperative of the successful work in tourism and hospitality. Well-known saying “the number of languages you speak is the number of times you are human” is best understood in this field. Good knowledge of foreign languages enables communication and the establishment of personal competence in professional career. Thus oriented Center for Foreign Languages of Singidunum University provides basis for this field of specialization.

Computer skills and the application of IT technology is the condition for survival and success in the contemporary business. Promotion, sales, but also the flow of goods and services within a contemporary tourist organization (business), management of human resources and financial reporting cannot be imagined nowadays without efficient information system and people who are trained for its usage.
Additional student training is diverse. It refers to specialized certificates related to the usage of the computers (Galileo, Amadeus, Micros Fidelio), as well as to the ability of taking exams for obtaining certificates for foreign languages within the British Council, Goethe Institute, Institute Cervantes, PLIDA, etc. All certificates can be obtained at Singidunum University, which enables students of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management to extend their knowledge acquired during the lectures by using appropriate literature.

All mentioned forms of knowledge acquisition share the same aim: to provide the quality of the teaching process and education. The quality is in the ability of the Faculty and University to meet the needs and requirements of the students and to establish the atmosphere in which the users of our services will enjoy.

SOFT SKILLS

Soft skills include complex knowledge and skills which show the ability of an individual to apply acquired knowledge and accomplish tasks which are characteristic (especially for managers) in contemporary business conditions through intellectual, emotional, social and other components. This kind of business skills should provide development based on knowledge and constant (life-long) learning. Soft skills are especially important in tourism and hospitality because of extreme interpersonality of services, that is, because of interaction between the service provider and recipient, which is constant and based mainly on psychological, sociological and other components.
(192)

(193)

Soft skills are acquired and learned through:

Student internship is highly developed at the Faculty and Singidunum University. It is realized in tourism economy and other numerous organizations through the training of our students to become acquainted with the contemporary tourism business and find their way in it. Singidunum University has more than 450 signed contracts for cooperation with businesses and organizations in our country and other countries as well, while the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management has signed 230 such contracts. On the basis of tutorial system and doing a particular job in a business, students get a chance to introduce themselves to prospective employers, which proved to be a good opportunity for their inclusion it the work processes in tourism. However, student internship at the Faculty has other forms such as having respectable businessmen and experts as guests on lectures, the participation of our students in numerous manifestations in Belgrade and the whole Serbia (fairs, international cultural, sport and other manifestations) and study tours which are organized annually. One of the especially important study tours is a trip of the final year students to the biggest world tourism stock market – Berlin stock market, etc.

Soft skills as a part of the curricula. Soft skills are significant for each and every prospective economist and their work in tourism industry. They include wide range of psychological components that every student requires for successful business communication and managing situations in the industry. Namely, they imply one should consider ethics in business, i.e. privacy and discretion when it comes to dealing with information on consumers or suppliers and partners; responsibility they have towards guests, their own institution and society in general. It is also important to learn how to manage potential conflicts within the organisation; how to motivate their employees; how to manage stress inherent in modern environment; to constantly strive for team work and to bear in mind that all above mentioned is for the purpose of meeting the needs of tourism consumers with whom they would constantly work upon completion of the studies.

Career Development Centre , that functions within Singidunum University helps students additionally develop and perfect soft skills. The career choice and career management skills are of great importance for their work and life in general. Help in decision-making process relating to their prospective careers, as well as directing students towards areas of interest in which they could use their skills in the best way is of extreme significance for them and their life and professional orienteering.
(194)
